The Spring class has already begun and is full. We will offer another class in August 2021. Details regarding registration will be posted here when available. We are unsure whether this course will be offered online or in person in August 2021.

Medical Terminology & Billing program description:  

This Riverside Adult School (RAS) course is designed to prepare students for an entry level career in Medical Billing. The course will prepare individuals to seek entry level employment as a Medical Biller. Students who already work in the medical field can benefit from this program by advancing their skills. Students completing the course with a grade of "C" or better, and 90-100% attendance, will receive a certificate of completion from the Riverside Adult School/Riverside Unified School District. 

The Medical Terminology portion of RAS program is articulated with the Riverside Community College District/Moreno Valley College (MVC) for 3 units of college credit. Students who earn a"B" or better in Medical Terminology will be able to apply for college credit at MVC. 

Who should enroll in this program?

  • Those with an interest in record keeping, calculating patient charges and review of files.
  • Job seekers interested in becoming a Medical Biller whose job duties include: 
  • Reading and analyzing patient records
  • Determining the correct codes for patient records
  • Using codes to bill insurance providers
  • Interacting with physicians and assistants to ensure accuracy
  • Keeping track of patient data over multiple visits
  • Managing detailed, specifically-coded information
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and information security


Pre-requisites: This program is free of charge to any person above the age of 18 who meets the following pre-requisites. In order to apply to this program a student must:

  • Graduation from high school is recommended but not required. Most jobs in the medical billing field require you to have graduated from high school or have earned your GED. 
  • Students who have previously been removed from this program for lack of attendance or other reasons may not be eligible to re-enroll.
  • Have basic computer skills, have a computer and internet access. The medical billing/coding field requires the use of computerized software programs. RAS'  program will provide instruction in the software programs, but due to the accelerated pace of the program time on remedial computer skills instruction is not available.
  • Complete a reading and listening assessment, that will be administered as part of the registration process and is a determining factor in enrollment.  If the score indicates that the student is lacking the reading and listening skills necessary to be successful in the program enrollment will be denied. Students must have a reading and listening level equivalent to the 9th grade of high school.

*eligible students are those that have a complete application and have taken the reading and listening assessment scoring into the acceptable range.

Schedule: 
The August 2021 class will run from August to December 2021. Exact dates will be posted as they are available, Local health conditions will determine whether this course will be offered online or in person.
If this class is offered in person the following are the schedules that students will be able to chose from:

Mon/Wed 8:30am to 12:30pm or
Tues/Thurs 8:30am to 12:30pm or
Mon/Wed 5:30-8:00pm or 
Tues/Thurs 5:30-8:00pm

Attendance while in distance learning:
Due to the online nature of this course, there is no physical attendance requirement. Students must keep in contact with the teacher, attend live Google Meet sessions and submit assigned work online weekly. Students who do not check in with the teacher, attend live Google Meet sessions, and fail to submit assigned work weekly will be dropped from the class. Please communicate with your teacher about any issues that are causing you to lack participation. 

Attendance while class is in person:
students must attend 90% of the class meetings each week.

Textbooks: Riverside Adult School, through funds from our California Adult Education Program Grant, provides the use of the electronic textbooks for all but one of the required textbooks. Students need to purchase their own copy of "CPT 2017 Standard". This textbook is available for purchase online for under $25. The remainder of the texts are provided to students electronically while in distance learning, or for their use in class while in class in person, at no charge.

If a student would like to purchase hardcopy of all of the textbooks they are able to do so. Riverside Adult School does not sell textbooks.  Some retailers offer books for rent as well.
