Pharmacy Technician

This course prepares students to become licensed Pharmacy Technicians in the State of California and gain entry-level pharmacy technician employment. 

Instruction includes:

• Knowledge of laws and regulations.

• Identification of terms, abbreviations, symbols, and drugs.

• Ability to calculate, use of metric and apothecary systems, and dispense medication.

• Record keeping techniques, clerical skills, customer service, retail skills, insurance and billing.

• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR training and card. (May not be offered due to COVID-19 restrictions)

• Application for registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy


Admission Requirements:

• Students must be 18 or older and present a High School transcript showing that the student has graduated. This must be presented at registration, no exceptions. (Non US high school graduates must have their education verified to be the equivalent of a US high school diploma by an agency listed here: http://www.naces.org/members.html

• Students must have an educational functioning level of "Exited from Advanced ESL" or "Low Advanced Secondary Education" as determined by assessments completed during registration. (Reading 236+/Listening 228+).  Strong English reading, speaking and listening skills are required to communicate effectively as a Pharmacy Technician intern.

• Current government-issued photo ID and Social Security card (required by CA State Board of Pharmacy)

• Working as a Pharmacy Technician is a physically demanding job. Potential students need to possess the physical ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, and stoop when completing internship hours at a pharmacy.

• Basic keyboarding and computer skills to facilitate learning of software.

• The program is funded through outcome based funding. This means that Riverside Adult School must show that students successfully earn a Pharmacy Technician license as a result of attending the program. Students must commit to applying for their license and meet all of the requirements to become licensed. The cost for obtaining your license is presently covered by Riverside Adult School and the process is completed during class. There are associated costs described below.

Program Requirements:

• Maintain a minimum 76% grade average and a 93% attendance rate (see attendance area below)

• 120-hour Internship included in program. (Due to COVID-19 this may not be available and will be replaced with in class instruction)

 

Attendance: Students must attend class daily and maintain a 93% attendance rate.

Program Costs:

The program is free to students. There are associated costs that the student is responsible for.

Your teacher will discuss the time frame for purchasing the items below once class starts:

• Students must purchase their own uniform/scrubs from the school's vendor. One set is required and must contain the Riverside Adult School logo in the color set by the school. The cost for one set is $35.

• Students must pay for LiveScan fingerprinting which is a requirement to obtain your Pharmacy Technician license. The cost is approximately $69.

• Students must pay for a self query report. The cost is $4.00


Textbooks:

The required textbooks are provided electronically free of charge and textbooks are available for student use in class. But if you would like to have your own set of all of the texts you will be given purchase information once you are accepted to the program.
